These tips keep costs low when withdrawing money or paying abroad.

Many Austrians are planning another summer holiday abroad this year. When staying in non-euro countries, according to Erste Bank, there are a few things you should take into account when paying or withdrawing money.

  • Currency exchange: some money in the holiday exchange makes sense. You must collect the foreign currency from your house bank. This is usually cheaper.
  • Prefer local currency: If you use a card to pay or withdraw money in a non-Euro area, you should always use the local currency and not convert to Euros.
  • GeoControl: Debit cards (bank cards) are usually automatically deactivated outside Europe. For the duration of the trip, you must use this protection against misuse, eg B. via bank app, turn it off.
  • ATM: In general, due to the high costs, you should not withdraw money from ATMs outside the euro countries.
  • Payment limit: If you want to be on the safe side, you can also lower the (daily) payment limit of the card.
  • Vacation Protection: Some credit cards include travel insurance. Be sure to check with the bank beforehand.
