US aircraft and defense company Boeing is investigating a cyber incident affecting its parts and sales operations following an extortion attempt. “The issue has no impact on flight safety,” a Boeing spokesperson said. “We are actively investigating the incident and working with law enforcement and regulatory authorities. We inform our customers and suppliers.”
Boeing acknowledged the incident after the hacking organization Lockbit threatened to release a “massive amount” of stolen sensitive data from the aircraft manufacturer online if Boeing did not pay a ransom by November 2.
The threat was no longer on the group’s website on Wednesday. It is unclear which Boeing data was stolen. Lockbit did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Boeing declined to comment on whether Lockbit was behind the cyber incident and whether defense-related data was affected.
“Technical problems” on the website
The Airbus rival’s spare parts and distribution business, part of the Global Services division, provides materials and logistics support to its customers, the annual report showed. Some pages on the official website containing information about the Global Services division were unavailable on Wednesday due to technical problems. “We expect the site to be back online soon,” the pages say.
In terms of the number of victims, Lockbit was the most active ransomware group in the world last year, according to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The hackers have attacked more than 1,700 American organizations since 2020. CISA initially did not comment on Boeing’s statement.
