Plus 18 percent – EU imported more gas from Russia in 2024

Date:

Despite the war in Ukraine, the EU imported more gas from Russia last year. The plus was 18 percent, as the Ember Thought Factory calculated. Both gas that entered the EU through pipelines and liquid gas (LNG) were taken into account.

According to Em -especially, more gas has moved to Italy, the Czech Republic and France. Import has also increased this year. However, this was not necessary, Ember said, because the question did not increase at all. Moreover, gas prices in the previous year increased by almost 60 percent.

“It is a scandal that the EU still imports Russian gas,” said Pwel Czyzak van Ember. “Instead of investing in real alternatives such as renewable energy sources and efficiency to prevent Russian imports, the Member States burn money with expensive LNG capacities that are not even used.” There will be an oversupply in 2030.

Keepbot from 2027?
After the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the EU actually laid down sanctions against Russian energy sources such as coal and oil. By 2027, the Community of States no longer wants to import gas from Russia, but this project is not legally binding. Since the change of the year, the Ukrainian authorities have no longer been passed on Russian natural gas, the transit through pipelines over the territory has been prevented.

The EU committee is currently working on a timetable to prevent Russian fossil energy, which must be presented in the coming week. Liquid gas from Russia is currently being introduced to the EU. The EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen described as “completely untenable”: “Since the start of the war, we have spent as much money on fossil fuels from Russia if 2400 F-35 Vechtjets would cost.”

Risks also with other suppliers
According to Ember, however, security would not be guaranteed if the EU would no longer lose Russian gas. Other sources have also become inconsistent, the think tank said and remembered the geopolitical tensions with the United States. The largest gas suppliers of the EU are currently Norway and the United States.
