Gartner Analysis: – PC Market Shrinks Again After Pandemic Boom

Date:

According to calculations by market researchers, PC sales will fall by about ten percent this year after the corona boom. A “perfect storm” of geopolitical turmoil, high inflation, currency fluctuations and supply shortages is brewing for the company, said Ranjit Atwal of market research firm Gartner.

According to Gartner calculations, PC sales rose 11 percent last year to 342 million notebook and desktop computers. For this year, the analysts expect a decrease of 9.5 percent to 310 million devices.

The negative comes mainly from the consumer business, which according to Gartner forecasts will shrink by no less than 13 percent. When doing business with companies, market researchers expect a decrease of 7.2 percent.

Pandemic made the PC market thrive
In the pandemic, with more home working and learning, the PC market, which had to lose a lot of feathers with the rise of smartphones, experienced a renaissance. Previously, one PC per household was often enough, but during the Corona period, more family members suddenly needed their own computer. Companies have made a large-scale transition from desktop computers to notebook computers, for example to allow employees to work from home. Increased demand contributed to shortages of chips and other components. The development also shifted the demand even more from desktop computers to laptops.

Gartner expects sales of smartphones with super-fast 5G data transmission to grow 29 percent this year to 710 million devices. However, this is well below the 47 percent growth estimate at the start of the year. One trigger is the slowdown in business in China, where Gartner expects a 2 percent drop – after a 65 percent jump last year.
