The recently passed US law to promote semiconductor manufacturing is bearing fruit: industrial heavyweight Micron wants to invest billions in the production of memory chips in the US.
By the end of the decade, 40 billion dollars (about 39 billion euros) must be invested in several phases, Micron announced on Tuesday. The company made explicit reference to the recently passed “Chips and Science Act” grants to promote semiconductor manufacturing in the US. At Micron, 5,000 jobs are to be created.
The law aims to reduce the US’s dependence on chip production in Asia. There is, among other things, large production capacity in Taiwan – given the tensions with China, American politicians are concerned about security of supply.
