Date:

The artist was 87 years old and although he was born in Barcelona in the 1970s, he lived in the Murcia region where he learned to paint. In 2013, it celebrated 40 years of dedication with an exhibition in Chys

Mateo Bovet Esteve, a painter from Barcelona who has lived in the Murcia region since the 1970s, died Thursday at the age of 87. The funeral will take place this Friday, at 10 a.m., at the funeral home of Jesus in Murcia. Bovet knew the secret of watercolor like few artists: «It remains scary because it fails very easily. You’re wrong and that’s it: you have to throw it all away. So he told it in a report published in LA VERDAD (Mateo Bovet, The secret of a watercolor in 2019), in which he said that he did not want to retire because with painting he cultivated his great passion and made him feel young .

He was an artist fascinated by the morphology of birds, painting time and again in a country with a great fondness for pigeon breeding (he bookmarked some of them accompanied by literary quotes from his favorite authors, be it Cervantes, Ramón y Cajal or Miguel Hernandez). He was also dedicated to Ramón Gaya and his ‘gouaches’, for painting the monumental interiors of the Cathedral of Murcia… In Murcia he started painting in the 1970s, with oil, charcoal, pen drawing.

“I am married to Antoñita López Bernal, from Cartagena, and I have stayed here. I have lived in Badalona, Puebla de San Julián (Lugo), Huesca, Valdepeñas, Tetuán, Gironella, Alicante, Cartagena, Cuenca… and certainly in Murcia. I have devoted most of my time to watercolor. I have work in the royal family, in the city council of Cartagena, in the diocese of Cartagena, in the ministry of agriculture and in Kuwait!’ said Bovet, who had perfect control of perspective. He practiced as a state draftsman at the National Institute of Agrarian Reform and Development (IRYDA), a public body that was active between 1971 and 1995, so that painting was not his main occupation. He has starred in important exhibitions for him as an artist, mainly at the Chys gallery in Murcia, where he celebrated his 40 years as an artist with a major exhibition in 2013. “And I sold a lot at Chys, which had a big movement on the time, and it didn’t go bad for me, the truth”.

Bovet illustrated a tourism campaign of the Autonomous Community, in posters with tourism promotion in all municipalities. He also undertook exhibition projects on monuments in the Murcia region and illustrated books, such as that of Frasquito Fernández Egea entitled ‘Favorite and adoptive sons of Murcia’. His seascapes were appreciated. It was the utmost discretion in the art world. With his departure, a lover of painting is lost. On his website https://mateobovetpintura.wordpress.com/, many of his works, performed in his studio in El Puntal (Murcia), remain a testimony.
