The Pamplona House of Mercy wins the National Bullfighting Award

The Casa de Misericordia de Pamplona on Monday won the National Bullfighting Prize “for its extraordinary outreach, closely associated with the organization and celebration of bullfighting shows.” A task that has led to the worldwide recognition and spread of the city of Pamplona and the bullfighting festival». On the occasion of this prize, the jury highlights “the traditional solidarity of the bullfighting world with social goals”.

The National Bullfighting Prize, endowed with 30,000 euros and awarded by the Ministry of Culture, is intended to recognize the meritorious work of a person, entity or institution during the last season in carrying out the various activities and manifestations of this activity.

The Casa de la Misericordia de Pamplona is an institution created by the city council in 1706. The aim is to care for people living in poverty. In the beginning, its activity was supported by private donations and various municipal aids. In 1922, after the transfer of ownership of a plot of land, the Pamplona City Council commissioned the Casa de la Misericordia to build a new bullring. Since then, it has hosted the various bullfighting festivities held in Pamplona, ​​such as the Bull Fair or the world-famous San Fermín Running of the Bulls, whose income is used to carry out its social work, focused since the 1980s on caring for the elderly.

The jury, chaired by Isaac Sastre de Diego, General Director of Cultural Heritage and Fine Arts, consisted of Teresa Belmonte García, professor at the University of Almería; Cristina Sánchez de Pablos, representative of the Union of Bullfighters; Mar Gutiérrez López, of the National Association of Bullfighting Show Organizers; David Prados Martín, of the National Union of Picadores and Spanish Banderilleros; Antonio Bañuelos García, representative of the Royal Union of Fighting Bull Breeders; José Luque Teruel, President of the Real Maestranza Arena in Seville; Beatriz Badorrey Martín, Professor of History of Law and Institutions at UNED); Marta Elena Alonso de la Varga, professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of León; María Amparo López Antelo, Director-General of the Interior, Department of the Presidency, Equality, Civil Service and Interior of the Government of Navarra; Raquel Sanz Lobo, representative of the Center for Bullfighting of the Community of Madrid; Manuel Durán Blázquez, photographer, documentary maker and writer of bullfighting, and José Enrique Moreno, director of Toromedia and Santiago de León y Domecq, lieutenant of Hermano Mayor of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla.
