“The audience is important, but I think independence and quality are more important”

Date:

The journalist returns to the second TVE channel with a new daily newspaper in which culture is central

Culture is the central axis of ‘Cultures 2’, the new daily newspaper of La 2 (Monday to Thursday at 8:20 pm) that focuses on current events, without forgetting other movements that normally do not attract much attention. In front is the journalist Paula Sainz-Pardo (Madrid, aged 32), who returns to television after being the last presenter of ‘La 2 Noticias’, the alternative news program of the second TVE network that ended without a formal farewell after more than a quarter of a century on broadcast.

-This program was born in response to a pending demand from television to cover?

-This program was presented to me by Ignacio Elguero, head of culture at RTVE. I think a cultural format on television, and even more so on public television, was necessary. The initial reviews we received were all very good and agreed that a program like this was missing on TVE. There is a very large team behind it and we determine how we want the space. The idea of ’Cultures 2′ is to be a brand for La 2; that leaves a mark and represents the viewer, that is constantly innovating and that is unpredictable. In short, making a television that captivates and eventually becomes the most important cultural measure on the small screen. We want it to become the great cultural center.

-They bet on a television without rush if we go fast.

-Because we are not looking for fashion, nor for what is or is not worn. We want quality. A culture magazine allows you to tell things in a more relaxed way, contextualizing them. It is a hallmark of La 2, a chain that never seeks immediacy. ‘Cultures 2’ as a chain brand is also looking for that.

-They’ll talk about series and podcasts, formats that sometimes we don’t have to do with culture. Why did you decide to include them?

-Why not? It wasn’t a decision to serialize or not; went out alone. Just as we talk about music, film, comics or urban culture, we have decided to include fiction and podcasts in the program as well. There was no discussion. We have deeply internalized that these formats are already part of our lives. We want young people and also children, with an employee that we close, but we don’t give up at all ages. It is a vibrant and diverse program aware of the cultural agenda, with the aim of talking about the big names who are the backbone of society and cultural movements. We go to the local culture, which develops in small areas and cities.

-Is it frustrating that there is only one cultural magazine on public television and other channels in the background?

-Culture shines through its absence on television and that is a pity. La 2 is a reference and I would like all televisions to focus more on culture. The audience is important, but I think independence and quality are more important. And that’s more relevant in a chain like La 2.

-How did the cultural sector receive this new programme?

– It was a unanimous answer. Everyone congratulated us and wished us a long life. At the premiere, we interviewed Rosa Montero, who was very excited to be godmother. It was brilliant. In the reports that we started recording with the culture world, everyone agreed that a program like this was necessary and that it is on public television is appreciated. They deserved this good news.

-Isn’t the possible return of ‘La 2 Noticias’ happening?

-I hope it’s not a thing of the past and that we’ll see ‘La 2 Noticias’ again. I would like. They are two complementary formats. For me I would come back tomorrow and as always. The viewers and I miss him.

-What have you learned in this phase?

I learned to do journalism. One of the best things about it is that it helped contextualize. I miss that part of ‘La 2 Noticias’, which talked about forgotten conflicts, although it is true that TVE’s ‘Telediarios’ talks more and more about those countries that are on the margins. There is a great need for an informative offender and villain. It was a shame that we said goodbye in that way, the Thursday before the pandemic alert. He never came back. After 25 years of news, he deserved a dignified farewell, for all the previous teams that hadn’t had it easy. It was a highly award-winning and much-loved program.

-He came to tell that he was sexually abused when he was eleven years old.

-I told it live on the news because we were going to talk about a story about how abuse was discussed in a Twitter thread following a book by Cristina Fallarás. It was right, it was the reason to report the number of women who rely on networks that happen to all of us. I didn’t do anything wrong and I told you. We need not be ashamed. The blush must be for the person who made it. It’s important to give visibility, because if it doesn’t appear, it doesn’t exist.
