The jury of the prize, convened by the winery of the Jumillano family, endowed with 50,000 euros, chooses his work “A glean of hope”
The young Berlin composer David Heymann won the fourth edition of the Gil Soundtrack Award, presented by the family winery Jumillano. The jury, chaired by film director Alejandro Amenábar, unanimously decided to award the German artist this prize for soundtracks and to award a cash prize of 50,000 euros.
The winning score ‘A glean of hope’ -a glimmer of hope- convinced the jury, including Constantino Martínez-Orts, director of the Film Symphony Orchestra; the composer and music producer Lucio Godoy; the composer and specialist in film music, Jumillano Roque Baños; and Juan Gil Vera, representative of Viñas Familia Gil and promoter of the Gil Soundtrack Award.
Heyman was born in Berlin and was musically trained at the Robert Schumann School of Music and the University of Arts in Utrecht. He started composing music for short films and film projects. In addition, it is noteworthy that the young musician was also a finalist in the third edition of this competition.
Amenábar emphasized that the winning work meets two requirements that he believes are fundamental. On the one hand, he explained, “it’s very coherent and delicate, both in the musical development and in the instrumentation.” On the other hand, “it examines in depth the expressive possibilities of what we are told, and therefore contributes not only to emotional reinforcement, which is generally attributed to music, but also to a better understanding of some of the passages in the short movie .”
The well-known film director also emphasized the importance of this award, assuring that he was not aware of any similar award. “I congratulate the promoters for promoting and encouraging such an important part in the production of audiovisual works,” he insisted.
The winning soundtrack accompanies the short film ‘What you plant’, which was selected from a previous script competition in collaboration with the Escola Superior de Cinema I Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC). It is produced by the same with a team made up entirely of students and graduates of this center.
Created in 2016 by Viñas Familia Gil, this fourth edition of this international soundtrack award represents the consolidation of a unique Spanish award in the world, which aims to promote and support culture and young talent. In this edition, 153 works by participants from four continents were presented, making it an event with a worldwide reach. There were young composers from Spain, Italy, United States, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, United Kingdom, France, China, Korea, Malaysia, Peru, Germany, Taiwan, Guatemala, Georgia, Russia, Netherlands, Ukraine, Mexico, Egypt , Venezuela. , Indonesia, Japan and Portugal.
