Cult of the classics in the reading club of UMU friends

Date:

‘Medea’, ‘The Diamond Square’, ‘Miau’, ‘There is no revenge without punishment’, ‘Oedipus the King’ and ‘The Inner Border’ are the proposals for this season

‘La plaza del Diamante’ (1962), by the Catalan writer Mercè Rodoreda, was the book chosen by Consuelo Ruiz Montero, retired professor of Greek philology and responsible for this season, with the support of Professor María José Portillo, of the Reading Club of the Association of Former Students and Friends of the University of Murcia (alumni), chaired by Tomás Zamora. A monthly lecture and relaxed meeting, with an introduction to the work and an open debate, in the Mariano Baquero room of the Faculty of Arts. Accessible to anyone who wants to [inscripciones en la página web: https://www.um.es/web/alumni/].

Ruiz Montero faces this stage “totally excited” after more than 45 years completely devoted to teaching and research. It started with ‘Medea’, by Euripides. “The classics,” underlines the club’s coordinator, “are a therapy against loneliness, against barbarity, against suffering, like poetry.” The next meeting is on December 12, with Manuel Moyano, author of ‘La Frontera Interior’ (RBA, 2022), who will participate as a guest. “I read the book and I liked it and travel books are always interesting. In this case, Moyano proposes a tour through Sierra Morena,” explains Ruiz Montero. In January 2023, Francisco Javier Díez de Revenga will speak about ‘Miau’, by Benito Pérez Galdós, set in Madrid in 1878.

Francisco Florit, professor of Spanish literature at UMU, will comment in February on ‘There is no revenge without punishment’, by Lope de Vega, and Ruiz Montero proposes to debate ‘Oedipus the king’, by Sophocles, in March, and compares Lope’s tragedy to the Greek tragedy. “Anyone can go, former students and supporters of the university, and it’s a way to keep us active,” said Ruiz Montero, very pleased with the club’s commitment to ‘Medea’.

“There we see one powerful, liberated, feminist woman, and the other, Jason, looks like a fool. But what do you complain about when he is married to the king’s daughter and he and his children live well and are happy? The dialogue between them is impressive. He is cynical, selfish, who only thinks of his own good. Then Medea wonders why so many oaths, what about the allegiance you owe me, she speaks like a man, and no fifth-century woman would dare so much. Moreover, through Euripides, he wonders why my father gave me so much culture to make me feel different from the rest of my fellow citizens». The bad thing is that he kills his children, “though not in all versions,” he notes, “so that they are not at the mercy of the other, or of those who come from there, so that they are not humiliated if they remain …with their father. Moreover, she plans her revenge, and the gods do not punish her. Euripides does not punish her. A modern woman with success among the public.
