‘Salilab-UMU’ has been established at the University of Murcia, a laboratory dedicated exclusively to conducting saliva analysis, from which very useful information can be obtained to assess the health status and welfare of both animal and human animals. .
Saliva is a sample of great importance because it can be obtained much more easily than blood and without causing any kind of stress or pain. In addition, various biomarkers can be analyzed from it that provide information about the level of inflammation, stress, the state of the immune system and the oxidative balance, which is also useful for detecting infectious diseases, as recently demonstrated with Covid-19.
This laboratory has a broad panel of biomarkers related to well-being and health, such as oxytocin, acute phase proteins, cortisol, etc., which can be determined thanks to the use of saliva samples from different species, and it is expected that the panel can be used in the be expanded in the near future thanks to the projects involving the research group that promotes the laboratory. The determination of these biomarkers is offered by Salilab-UMU as a science-based specialized analytical service aimed at research groups, other analytical laboratories and companies related to production and animal welfare and health, positioning this laboratory as one of the most advanced internationally when it comes to to provide saliva-based analysis services.
Salilab-UMU has the latest technologies to perform saliva analyzes in both humans and different animal species. The analytical services offered include: quantification of oxytocin, as a marker of well-being situations, using a method patented by UMU; Procalcitonin quantification, as a sepsis marker; determination of stress markers such as cortisol, chromogranin A or alpha-amylase; determination of markers of inflammation and immune status, such as C-reactive protein (using a method also patented), haptoglobin or adenosine deaminase; analysis of oxidative stress markers such as total antioxidant capacity or radicals such as hydrogen peroxide; and determination of immune response markers and detection of pathogens such as Covid-19 or leishmaniosis.
Salilab-UMU has been promoted by the research group Interlab-UMU, led by Professor José Cerón. Four of the members of this group (Silvia Martínez, Fernando Tecles and Asta Tvarijonaviciute, as well as Professor Cerón) are among the world’s most influential scientists in their fields of research, according to Stanford University’s ranking of the most outstanding scientists at the international level. Lorena Franco is also part of this group, one of the researchers recognized by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) for her scientific contributions.
The research group has been working on saliva analysis for more than 20 years, as they first reported that C-reactive protein in saliva could be quantified at the start of their research activity. This laboratory was created with the help of the Seneca Foundation through the call for Proof of Concept grants, which support the commercialization and exploitation of scientific research results.
