New informative competitions from the UMU, the most useful tool to promote creativity in the classroom

Date:

‘MasterChem’ and ‘Don’t let them tell you stories!’ are ongoing initiatives that interest students in subjects such as chemistry and history

Each year, UMU launches initiatives so that students at all stages of their education, from school to university, can fulfill their potential while enjoying and being interested in some of the subjects that most suffocate them. Therefore, a number of competitions are currently underway to transfer knowledge on two very different topics, but both use digital tools in educational centers to reach the youngest audience.

‘MasterChem’ is one of the longest running initiatives of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit, developed in collaboration with the Spanish Science and Technology Foundation of the Ministry of Science and Innovation. Created according to the culinary program schedule, this competition aims to increase interest in chemistry among students from the region of Murcia and the provinces of Alicante, Albacete and Almería.

To do this, throughout the course it offers a series of activities that culminate in a fast-paced finale in which the teams must see some surprise boxes that hide all the necessary materials to conduct a secret experiment.

But this closing gala is action-packed, and that is that to get to the laboratories, the teams, consisting of a maximum of four students and two professors, must first brave an escape room through the facilities of the Faculty of Chemistry.

To participate, teams must videotape their best experiment with an extension of two to four minutes and send it to masterchem@um.es before January 35.

Is all the historical content we see in series and movies true? “Don’t let them tell you stories!” is the competition that challenges students to bring out the scientifically proven story. Also from the social network for young people par excellence: Tik Tok.

The groups of ESO, Bachelor and University students will be the creators and protagonists of short videos that will be uploaded to social networks to share their little investigations into historical hoaxes with the rest of the users.

This competition, carried out in collaboration with the Temporary Laboratory Group (LATE) of the UMU, is open to the Region, but also has a special category for videos from another community. To register, all you have to do is send an email to preteritum@um.es before January 31, 2023 with the interest to participate. Final videos must be submitted by April 30. The information and rules for both competitions are available on the website of the Scientific Cultural Unit of the University of Murcia.
