Professionals born in or related to the province for their films are aiming for Academy Awards today
After sixty awards and more than a hundred nominations, winning the Goya would be the finishing touch for ‘Sorda’, the short film by Eva Libertad from Murcia and Nuria Muñoz from Molina, competing for the Film Academy prize in the Best Fiction category Short Film. Today at 10 p.m., the great gala of Spanish cinema begins, broadcast from Seville by TVE and presented by Clara Lago and Antonio de la Torre. A gala that will have a Murcian presence thanks to the links of the various professionals with the region of Murcia.
Days before the event, Eva Libertad confirmed the “inevitable” nervousness that the nominees should feel for such an award: “We are experiencing something that is new to us. In addition, the gala comes at a time when we continue to work with projects that we have to deliver on time and everything is mixed up, because we have to be focused on work but at the same time have to arrange a lot for the gala, which is the same as organizing a wedding,” explains the director of this production, shot in the orchard by Molina de Segura, which tells the story of Ángela (character played by the non-hearing actress Miriam Garlo), a deaf woman who faces the fears of motherhood in a society full of obstacles and discrimination and shares his life with Darío ( Pepe Galera).
Libertad, who is preparing a feature film based on ‘Sorda’ with Muñoz, is particularly clear about her goal: “Have as much fun as possible and as little stress as possible, because the vote has long been closed.” Both Eva Libertad and Miriam Garlo will be present dressed by the Murcian brand Laura Bernal. This will not be the only company from the region to parade on the red carpet, as De la Cierva and Nicolás will dress, among others, Colombian actress Natalia Reyes, an interpreter known for starring in the movie ‘Terminator Dark Fate’ in 2019 .
Unfortunately, not all creators with links to the region will be able to win, because in the Best Fiction Short Film category, Elías León Siminiani from Santander, who lived in Murcia for many years and has family here, is also nominated for ‘Emotional Architecture 1959’ . A journey to Franco’s Spain and their class difference through the relationship of Sebas and Andrea – Manuel Egozcue and Marta Carmona – with the architectural and urban planning work of Secundino Zuazo as an axis for which the filmmaker has received his fourth nomination for the Goya. So far he has not managed to win the prize. In addition to those mentioned, compete in this category ‘La entrega’, by Pedro Díaz; ‘Boy’, by Jaime Olías de Lima; and ‘Strings’, by Estibaliz Urresola.
If the surroundings of Molina de Segura served as a fictional setting for ‘Sorda’; El Jarral, in Abarán, was one of the locations chosen by Elena López Riera for the filming of ‘El agua’. La Vega Baja is the protagonist of this film whose plot is centered around an old popular belief passed down from generation to generation, according to which some women are destined to disappear with every new flood because they ‘have the water in them’. The director from Oriolan has received a Goya nomination for Best New Director with her ‘first film’. The prize is contested with Carlota Pereda (‘Cerdita’), Mikel Gurrea (‘Suro’), Juan Diego Botto (‘En los márgenes’) and Alauda Ruiz de Azúa (‘Cinco lobitos’).
Also opting for a big headline, in the Best New Actress category, Luna Pamies, protagonist of the film in which the Murcian Alberto Olmo, Nieve de Medina and Barbara Lennie also participate. In addition, the casting was carried out in Murcia.
And if Elías León Siminiani has four nominations, the name of the hairdresser Jesús Gil Bermúdez from Calasparra is also not among the Goya nominations for the first time. After being one of the favorites to win the award for his spectacular work on ‘Skins’, the film with which Eduardo Casanova made his directorial debut, Gil will this time compete to win the Goya for best hairdresser and make-up for his work on ‘As beasts’. The rural ‘thriller’ directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen is the film with the most nominations, 17.
Jesús Gil Bermúdez forms a team with Irene Pedrosa in this production and will compete for the main prize together with Yolanda Piña and Félix Terrero (‘Modelo 77’); Paloma Lozano and Nacho Díaz (“Cerdita”); Sarai Rodríguez, Raquel González and Óscar del Monte (“La piedad”); and Montse San Feliu, Carolina Atxukarro and Pablo Perona (“The Crooked Lines of God”).
