“Wanting to look for a short-term effect in television is difficult”

‘Reaction in chain’ premieres on Telecinco, a competition to test the ability to relate words

Fun, excitement and a daily jackpot of more than 150,000 euros at stake are the ingredients of ‘Reaction in chain’, the competition that Telecinco will premiere on Monday afternoon (8 p.m.). The members of each team will put their word-matching skills to the test with a double goal: collect as much money as possible in their markers and emerge as winners. Based on the international format ‘Chain Reaction’, presenter Ion Aramendi (San Sebastián, age 45) takes charge of Mediaset’s new bet. It will try to boost ratings ahead of the Pedro Piqueras newscast.

-Go back to matches after ‘The Hunter’.

– It’s going to be a beautiful stage. It is a very fun and easy game that can be played from home. You don’t have to be a brainiac. You have to associate common words that we all know.

-What is your strong point?

-It is a format not very well known in Spain. Chained Words may sound familiar to us, but it’s a new competition that is triumphant in the US and has existed in Italy for 15 years. The key is that it is addictive.

-Where is the difficulty?

-Just because it’s easy to understand doesn’t mean it’s hard to play. As the game progresses and the prize increases, so does the difficulty. Playing to hit is not that easy.

-What will be played in the last pot?

-It is daily and can have more than 150,000 euros. It does not accumulate from day to day. The team that repeats if it wins increases its piggy bank and its own pot. I can’t say much, but there are already large sums in the recorded programs.

– Will they come together with Christian Gálvez (’25 words’) to radically change Telecinco’s afternoons?

-Let’s fight it. They are two products that are very cool. And hopefully we will revolutionize Telecinco. Ultimately, television is a task of breaking stone, little by little. The time slot from 7pm to 9pm is very complicated. But I think we are at a good time for competitions.

– Take on the almighty ‘Pasapalabra’ from Antena 3…

It’s a wonderful match. Roberto Leal and I love each other very much. He is professionally and personally a type of ten. When he heard that I was going to present ‘Chain Reaction’ he called me. We want to live together Don’t go wrong with anyone. I think this game is worth it and I hope we will win over the crowd little by little. without subtraction ‘Pasapalabra’ is a great cucumber and I hope we can show that from today.

-Is it a good idea to launch two games at the same time?

-I don’t do the strategies on Telecinco, but from my experience I think the pairing with two games in a row works. It happened with ‘Boom!’ and ‘Pasapalabra’ on Antena 3. My experience with ‘El cazador’ on TVE is that it only started working a year after the premiere. Hopefully we will do it for many years to come.

-Did you demand a viewer share from the network?

-Neither in Mediaset nor in other channels have I ever had to meet an audience target. We all live from and for the daily data of ‘sharing’. If we bring a great product to market, I ask Telecinco to be patient enough. When it’s done, the format can certainly shine. Mediaset and I are one in this. We have a chance to make it work. There is no formula other than patience. Wanting to look for a short-term effect on television is difficult.

-Besides ‘Pasapalabra’ you will compete for a while with your former colleagues from ‘El cazador’. How will that duel live?

-With all the love in the world. I love the family of ‘El cazador’ very much and I am happy with their successes. And I know they also hope that I do very well. I want to live with everyone and I think there is room. Don’t be greedy the rest of us and leave us gaps (laughs).

-Are we in a golden age for television contests?

-Hopefully we’re experiencing it now with ‘Chain Reaction’. There have been contests for a lifetime: ‘Numbers and letters’, ‘Time is money’, ‘Know and win’, which will go on for eternity… It’s a very fun contest because it’s fun formats. The competition is a genre that should not disappear.

-Experience a great professional moment at Mediaset.

-I started very happily in January in ‘El cazador’ on TVE, but the opportunity arose that you only get once in your life: to return to Telecinco, the house where I was born. Presenting ‘Survivors’ on Sunday was a dream come true. The decision was not an easy one, but it was clear to me. Now the format you expected has arrived. On a personal level, my daughter Marieta was born and I am very happy about that.
