Granada-born Fernando Navarro, writer of film and series scripts, beat 90 other candidates with the storybook ‘Malaventura’

Fernando Navarro received the XIX Setenil Prize yesterday with “the desire to share it with the people and very happy,” said the writer from Granada at the ceremony held in the nonagonal room of the Museum of the Enclave of the Walls (Mudem). He regularly collaborates as a screenwriter for many Spanish filmmakers and with his first published book, ‘Malaventura’ (Impedimenta), he has “won the award for the best short story held in Spain and I have no doubt about it”, noted the president of the jury, Fernando Clemot, who won the prize in 2009.

According to Navarro, ‘Malaventura’ can be defined as “a sour western, a ghost movie that hasn’t been shot yet.” Clemot, in turn, admitted that the finale was “very close, but I’m calm because it’s a whole book of stories that gives prestige to the award.” Both emphasized that after winning the Setenil, their books have had a greater impact, as well as their own careers. Molina’s mayor, Eliseo García, was convinced they were “in the right line” and will continue to work to give the call more international appeal.

‘Malaventura’ won against 91 works presented by publishers and authors from all over the country. The Setenil Prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and is considered one of the references in the short story genre in Spain. Prior to delivery, an act took place that has become essential after nineteen years of tradition. The discovery of a commemorative plaque on a bench in the central Paseo Rosales, where the winner’s name appears with a short excerpt from the winning book. “I loved the drawing and I hope many couples will get their hands on it,” joked the prize winner shortly after taking a picture with the mayor, aldermen, his editor and the chairman of the jury. In the morning he also met with students from the municipality of IES Francisco de Goya.
