The creator of ‘ethio-jazz’ performed with seven other instrumentalists as part of the Global Sounds cycle at Fundación Mediterráneo headquarters
The headquarters of Fundación Mediterráneo in Murcia vibrated this Saturday with the lessons of one of the greatest figures in African music, the legendary musician and arranger Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia, 1943), father of ethio-jazz, trained at Trinity College in London and the first African student at the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston. Filmmakers like Jim Jarmusch included his creations in their film projects and he is a great reference for current musicians like Kanye West, Nas and Damian Marley.
The vibraphonist was introduced in Murcia as “Doctor Astatke”. Invited to the Fundación Mediterráneo’s Global Sounds cycle and accompanied on stage by seven other instrumentalists, Astatke left behind the best of his inimitable creative genius in Murcia. An African jazz that has been claimed so many times that it was made in many places with old instruments from rural areas, “but that’s exciting,” says Mulatu.
In 2022, he was awarded at the San Sebastián Donostiako Jazzaldia jazz festival, dedicating the prize “to all Africa” and offering, as he did in Murcia, and as usual, a fusion of Ethiopian, Latin and jazz music.
