The short film ‘Emotional Architecture 1959’ wins the prize that ‘Sorda’ also aspired to, by Eva Libertad from Murcia and Nuria Muñoz from Molin
Despite several Community nominees, none of the Goya awards presented this Saturday will go to the Region of Murcia. More fortunate was the Cantabrian Elías León Siminiani, born in Santander but closely associated with Murcia, where he grew up and where some of his relatives still live, such as his sister. The director won the statuette for Best Fiction Short Film for ‘Emotional Architecture 1959’.
Buildings and urban planning are the protagonists of a film that has love as its driving force. So much so that during his acceptance speech, Siminiani had a few words to evoke the memory of Murcia’s emblematic Rex and Floridablanca cinemas, currently closed, among other spaces that are now just a memory.
The Goya for ‘Emotional Architecture 1959’ was also pursued by the tandem formed by Eva Libertad from Murcia and Nuria Muñoz from Molin, the directors of the short film ‘Sorda’. In the film, Miriam Garlo, a deaf actress and sister of Eva Libertad, delves from fiction into a reality little known to society at large. In addition, the work has been included at various points in Molina de Segura.
Despite being out of frame, the success of ‘Sorda’ has led to the next leap into the feature film format, which the creative team is already working on. Perhaps the Film Academy will give the story a second chance.
The Goya Awards 2023 also left the film ‘El Agua’, shot in the region of Murcia and Vega Baja, without an award this Saturday. The play was nominated for Best New Director, by Oriolan filmmaker Elena López Riera, and Best New Actress for the lead role of Luna Pamies, but it was ultimately empty.
The film is a story inspired by the September 2019 DANA, in particular in the floods caused by this meteorological phenomenon in the provinces of Murcia and Alicante. It tells the story of a family legacy in the hottest summer of the century and under the threat of a strong storm over a town in the Spanish Levant.
The Goya for Best Hairdresser and Make-up was also elusive with Jesús Gil from Calaparra, nominated for his work in the film ‘As bestas’, which nevertheless won nine statuettes. After being nominated in 2018 for his work in Eduardo Casanova’s film ‘Skins’, it is the second time that Gil is about to fulfill a dream he has cherished since childhood. And it’s that, as he confessed to LA VERDAD weeks before the gala, winning the “stubborn” has been his greatest illusion “since I can remember.” With two nominations to his credit, he will have to continue his efforts to endorse that popular saying that ensures that ‘the third time is a charm’.
