The ‘Sombra’ Festival screens 21 feature films and 25 short films

The capital of the region will host the XII Murcia European Fantastic Film Shadow Festival from March 17 to 25. In its twelfth edition, which will mainly take place at the Regional Film Library and the Mediterranean Foundation, the festival screens 21 films and 25 short films, has 30 guests and carries out 17 parallel activities. Shadow is also collaborating with Filmin, Cutrecon and Rock Imperium for this occasion. The program was presented this Tuesday at the Moneo building of the Murcia City Council by the Councilor of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Pedro García Rex; by the councilor for equality, youth and development cooperation, Teresa Franco and by the director of Sombra, Javier García.

The city council supports with 30,000 euros the realization of this consolidated event in the sector, which the city projects internationally. “This is part of the important commitment of the City Council to the audiovisual sector, which joins the investment of more than 125,000 euros for the development of the IBAFF International Film Festival and the launch of one of the axes of the audiovisual hub and digital, which is considering a global investment in the municipality of 8 million euros,” said the Councilor of Culture, Pedro García Rex.

The mayor also pointed out that “Murcia currently has important tools to promote the audiovisual sector, such as OCULTO.TV, a municipal digital platform reaching 81 countries, with more than 100,000 unique users and more than 500,000 reproductions, from which creators Murcians such as Carlos Saiz, Joaquín Luna, Javier Lara, Carlos Matías, Raquel Agea, ARK or the Poveda brothers».

In turn, the youth councilor, Teresa Franco, pointed out that “in Murcia we have wonderful spaces and conditions to host and disseminate culture and audiovisual art. Being able to welcome and enjoy so much talent is a source of pride for our municipality and surely thousands of young people will enjoy this 12th edition from March 17 to 25”.

Claudio Simonetti, one of the great music composers for horror films, confirmed his presence. With his band, Claudio Simometti’s Goblin will perform the soundtrack of the classic ‘Suspiria’ live, during the closing of the festival, on Saturday 25 March. The composer, of Italian descent, also receives the first Bernard Herrmann Prize in recognition of musical myths of fantastic cinema. The artist is a protagonist of the fantastic cinema in which he has earned his place as the author of Italian horror films and some mythical American films such as “Dawn of the dead” by George A. Romero, shot in 1978. Since 1975, with his group called Simonetti’s Goblin, composed music for some Italian horror classics with directors such as Dario Argento in ‘Profondo rosso’, from 1975 or the famous ‘Suspiria’, from 1978.

‘Irati’, a film nominated for five Goyas, opens the festival on Friday 17. The second feature film by Basque director Paul Urkijo has won prizes at festivals such as Sitges or the Fancine in Malaga. It is a tale of sword and sorcery packed with fantastical elements of Basque folklore. Enzo G. Castellari will present his legendary movie ‘1990: The Bronx Warriors’ on Friday 24. That same day, Castellari, a legend of Italian cinema, remembered by Tarantino as one of his great inspirations, will receive the ‘Shadow of Legends’. ‘award’. The actor Carlos Urrutia will receive the Nosferatu Prize and the director of the Sitges Foundation, Mónica García, will present her book ‘Woman in fan’.

There are talks like ‘Sharks: myths, truths and falsehoods’, a meeting with the biologist Emilio Cortés who will give a talk projecting images from subgenre films that give a scientific angle. In collaboration with ‘Rock Imperium’, the film ‘KISS meets the Phantom of the Park’ (Gordon Hessler, 1978) will be screened, with a make-up artist at the disposal of the invited audience.

The Europe Direct team, Megalomaniac director and producer Karim Ouelhaj and Florence Saâdi, will discuss how to obtain European film funding. Likewise, Frank Muñoz and Pedro José Tena, directors of publishing company Applehead, will join Enzo G. Castellari and Claudio Simonetti in the presentation of their respective biographies; Lone Fleming presents the film ‘Panic on the Trans-Siberian’, directed by Eugenio Martín and Carlos Palencia, director of Cutrecon, will comment on The Toxic Avenger (Lloyd Kaufman, Michael Herz, 1984).

After visiting the venues of the International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia in Sitges and of the SGAE in Madrid, Sombra will open the exhibition ‘Your favorite terrors’ in which Spanish fantastic film directors present their most appreciated films. The exhibition opens March 2 at 8:30 p.m. at the Carmen Art Laboratory (LAC) and ends April 2. It includes materials from ‘Acción Mutante’, ‘The Day of the Beast’ or ‘The Residence’.

The Film Battle is part of the ‘Amazing Youth’ initiative and will see about a hundred young people from the educational centers of Murcia, who previously received training in filming with ‘smartphones’ in order to be as well prepared as possible for the agreed day. arrive. In the Film Battle, the contents of a script are revealed to them and they have eight hours to shoot with professional technical equipment.

As a highlight, the short films during Sombra will be screened in the Regional Film Library and published on the official channel of the festival on YouTube. The winning team will be awarded a FNAC check worth €1,000 which they will receive at the closing gala of the festival on 25 March.
