The reopening of Lyric Theater next month will soon be followed by a new comedy by Tara Lynn O’Neill, starring the mother of the Dairy Girls.
The Rough Girls will play September 4-25, 2021 and tell the story of Belfast’s first all-female soccer team at the end of World War I.
Headquartered in Belfast from 1917 to 1921, The Rough Girls is based on true events, the untold story of Belfast women who walked the field in shocking public shorts and shoes, with a standing ball and approval.
The ball bearing rebels, who continued to fight their way to the furious defense of the male-dominated game, collected thousands of pounds for those returning from the war. These ambitious, large-scale productions include up to 11 strong actresses with live music creating the heartbeat of the city at the time.
The new products are generously supported by Garfield Weston and Electric Ireland, whose ‘Game Changers’ campaign helps support and develop the talent and dedication of girls and women in football.
One hundred years after the founding of Northern Ireland’s first women’s soccer team, this partnership combines the magic of live stage, skill, and the magic of being on the pitch and skill. It also aims to introduce the new sports audience to the Sports Arts Theater and auditorium. says Jimmy Fay, Executive Producer of Lyric Belfast Theatre; “Every Lyric is grateful for the continued support of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and welcomes Electric Ireland as a sponsor of the Rough Girls.” Anne Smith, Care Specialist at Electric Ireland commented; Electric Ireland is delighted to be part of the Lyric Theater 2021 program and to support the Rough Girls as part of our comprehensive NI Game Changers campaign, which supports all levels of women’s and women’s football here in Northern Ireland. “Live theater is simply magical and we all miss the best way to come back from the original show about brave women who want to play sports. We want to take this story to a new audience, to bring art to fans of sports and sports art.” Rough Girls tickets will go on sale Friday 25 June 2021. For more details visit www.lyrictheatre.co.uk.
