Who are The Marias, the indie band that sings with Bad Bunny in ‘Another sunset’

Date:

The American group, led by Puerto Rican María Zardoya, is collaborating on the artist’s highly anticipated album ‘A summer without you’

Bad Bunny’s fourth album is already out. Fans of the Puerto Rican artist eagerly awaited May 6 to finally hear “A Summer Without You.” The new album has 23 songs, 7 of which are collaborations, and two of them in particular have attracted attention for being with unknown artists for a significant portion of the mainstream reggaeton audience. Who are the Marias and Buscabulla? Many wondered when the artist revealed the ‘track listing’.

Bad Bunny hasn’t released an album since November 2020, but in one year he released up to 3 different tracks. ‘I do what I want’, ‘Those who wouldn’t come out’ and ‘The last tour of the world’ led to success for the singer who in 2021 was again the most listened artist on Spotify of 2021 the world. And now in 2022, there isn’t a corner on the planet that hasn’t heard from the most international Latino. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, who started uploading his songs to Soundcloud, is now on his fourth album in a lightning career that elevates him to one of the most important singers of the 21st century.

‘A summer without you’ is full of reggaeton, but there is also room for other Latin rhythms such as merengue, and for trap, dance, electronic and love songs. ‘Another sunset’ speaks of a love from the past that is hard to forget, the collaboration between Bad Bunny and The Marias. “Tell me you made me that time passes and I don’t forget you” sings ‘the bad rabbit’. And in a hypnotic voice, María reminds you of that special person who is no longer there: «When life gives me pleasure again / I’m going to kiss you again like when the sun went down».

It is the first time that Bad Bunny has collaborated with this band, which distances itself from the Puerto Rican genre. However, the band’s lead singer, María Zardoya, and Bad Bunny share more than just their profession, as she was also born in Puerto Rico. The Marias is an indie group formed initially only by María and American drummer Josh Conway, later joined by guitarist Jesse Perlman for live performances, and Edward James on keyboard. The quartet released their first album ‘Cinema’ in June with 13 songs, most of them in English. Although ‘Another sunset’ with Bad Bunny is not his first song in Spanish.

The soft pop with soul and jazz influences that can be heard in all songs by The Marias can also be found in ‘Another sunset’. The group’s psychedelic sound and Bad Bunny’s voice fit in perfectly without losing their identity. Although they did not achieve great popularity in Spain and had little time for music, ‘I Don’t Know You’ or ‘Baby One More Time’ were viewed more than 10 million times. In 2016, The Marias was formed, featuring the angelic voice of María Zardoya and the sound of Josh Conway after meeting at a performance by the Puerto Rican at the local Kibitz Room in Los Angeles. Their first work received a Grammy nomination in 2021 for Best Non-Classical Album Production, but thanks to Bad Bunny, many will be listening to this emerging band for the first time.
