A commitment to quality and regional production in Murcia’s theaters and auditoriums

Romea, TCM and Bernal and the municipal spaces of districts will host more than 160 shows upon the return of summer, including ‘A night without a moon’, ‘Cris, petite brave’ and ‘Death and the maiden’

The next season in the municipal theaters and auditoriums of Murcia will be under high voltage with almost half of the scheduled shows of regional production, in a commitment to local creation and to make way in municipal spaces for proposals ‘made in the region of Murcia’ . The return of full capacity finally means that on the return of summer, the latest productions of Juan Diego Botto (National Theater Prize 2021), Carlos Hipólito, Vicky Peña, Imanol Arias, Juan Echanove, Javier Cámara can be enjoyed in Murcia , Javier Gutiérrez and Marta Nieto, as announced Tuesday by the Councilor for Culture, Pedro García Rex; the Coordinator of Performing Arts of the Municipal Council of Murcia, Juan Pablo Soler, and the playwright and Artistic Director César Oliva.

The Municipality of Murcia, which is 100% committed to high-quality performing arts, will host more than 160 shows between September and January. This includes, for example, award-winning shows at the Max Awards such as ‘A night without a moon’, ‘Cris, Little Brave’ and ‘Death and the Maiden’. But also proposals such as ‘Los farsantes’, from the Pablo Remón National Prize for Dramatic Literature 2021; the latest shows from La Zaranda, Ron Lalá and the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico; ‘Circus. Miliki’s Dream’ and award-winning family shows at FETEN such as ‘Las Cotton’, ‘Waiting for Will’ and ‘A Story Upside Down’.

With a clear predominance of theatre, emphasized Mayor García Rex, there will also be room for music, humor, dance, circus, magic, puppets and other formats such as the narrative journalism of ‘Diario vivo’, the ‘Experimentos homemade’ of Mayden and Natalia, the psychology show of Patri Psicología and Rafa Blanca ‘Fear does not kill, but fatigue’ and other proposals that introduce poetry to the stage. Cécile McLorin Salvant, Café Quijano, Siempre Así, La MODA, the opera Tosca and the tribute to Mecano ‘Daughter of the moon’ are some confirmations of the next season in the musical part, which will also include the humor of Carlos Latre and Goyo Jimenez.

Cycles such as Clásicos and Enero, Pequeño Romea (storytelling in English) and Pequeño Gran Teatro are on the program again, as is the Titeremurcia Festival, which features nine performances in theaters and auditoriums. The novelties include the 1st National Amateur Theater Competition at the Bernal Theater in El Palmar, the 1st Magical Murcia Festival in Romea or the presentation at the TCM of the 1st Performing Arts Laboratory of the Region of Murcia

All programming is available on the websites www.teatroromea.es, www.teatrocircomurcia.es, www.teatrobernal.com and www.enclavecultura.com. Tickets will also go on sale soon, with the support of the INAEM Platea Programme; the Dance on Stage and Circus on Stage circuits, promoted by INAEM and developed by the Spanish Network of Theaters; and the Professional Performing Arts and Music Circuit of the Region of Murcia, promoted by the Institute of Cultural Industries and the Arts of the Region of Murcia (ICA).

The Romea Theater and the TCM will host the majority of the program this coming season with 90 shows. The street circus welcomes the season in mid-September with ‘Àvol’ by Circ Bover and ‘Maña’ by the company Manolo Alcántara (2021 National Circus Award), and the program opens on September 22 and 23 with the dramatized reading of ‘Luces de Bohemia’, by the Association Amigos de Luces and under the direction of César Oliva.

According to the city council of Murcia, almost 50% of the scheduled shows are theatrical productions, including ‘Una noche sin luna’, the play by Juan Diego Botto, winner of two Max Awards (Best Show and Best Actor), which opens the Romea season after its acclaimed passage through the TCM in 2021; ‘Los farsantes’ (CDN and Buxman Producciones), a text for the Pablo Remón National Prize for Dramatic Literature with Javier Cámara and Franceso Carril; ‘La infamia’, starring the Murcian Marta Nieto in the shoes of Mexican journalist and activist Lydia Cacho, and ‘Los Remedios’ (La_Compañía exlímite), Max 2021 Award for Best Newcomer Authorship and finalist for Best Newcomer Show.

There will be versions of great classics of literature such as ‘The Holy Innocents’ (Miguel Delibes), with a wide cast led by Javier Gutiérrez; ‘Los pazos de Ulloa’ (Emilia Pardo Bazán), with Pere Ponce and Diana Palazón; ‘Death of a Salesman’ (Arthur Miller), with Imanol Arias; ‘El diablo cojuelo’, Juan Mayorga’s adaptation of Vélez de Guevara’s work for the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico and Rhum & Cía, and ‘Noche de Reyes’ (Shakespeare), directed by Helena Pimenta.

‘To be or not to be’, an adaptation of the Lubitsch film starring Juan Echanove; the black comedy ‘True West’, with Tristán Ulloa and Pablo Derqui; ‘Oceania’, “Gerardo Vera’s artistic and vital testament” starring Carlos Hipólito; ‘The Chiemsee Lake Kidnappers’, directed by Mario Gas and featuring a broad cast including Vicky Peña, Manuel Galiana and Gloria Muñoz; ‘The Struggle of the Absents’ by La Zaranda and the musical farce ‘Villa y Marte’ by Ron Lalá are other plays that will pass through Murcia next season.

Among the family proposals we find titles such as ‘Cris, petite brave’ (Max Award 2022 for Best Family Show); ‘Las Cotton’ (finalist for Max 2022 for Best Family Show and FETEN Award 2021 for Best Puppet Show); ‘Circus. Miliki’s dream’; proposals for babies such as ‘Baby Sferic’; the dance montage ‘Dancing is a book thing’, Rock and Familia concerts, stories in English and musicals for Christmas: ‘La ratita presumida’, ‘Dumbo. The Musical” and “SuperThings Live!”

In dance, the proposals ‘TRES de Ballet Triádico’, by Taiat Dansa, and ‘La muerte y la doncella’, a production of the Institut Valencià de Cultura directed and choreographed by Asun Noales, in Schubert’s sublime string quartet, won two Max 2021 Awards (Best Dance Show and Best Choreography). And the humor is provided by, among others, Carlos Latre with ‘One Man Show’, Goyo Jiménez with his successful ‘Aiguantulivinamérica’ and Joaquín Reyes.

Sevillian group Siempre Así celebrates its 30th anniversary on stage; Café Quijano presents ‘Manhattan’ and celebrates the 20th anniversary of their first album; and jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant, Zenet, La MODA, Maria Arnal and Marcel Bagés, Depedro and Carlos Núñez will also star in some of the season’s concerts. Opera returns to Romea with ‘Tosca’ (LGAM Company and the National Opera of Moldova); ‘Daughter of the Moon’, featuring Robin Torres, will recall the great themes of Mecano and the Festival Grandes del Góspel will pay tribute to Aretha Franklin at the TCM.

The Bernal Theater in El Palmar and the five municipal auditoriums (Algezares, Beniaján, Cabezo de Torres, Guadalupe and La Alberca) will host more than 70 stage and music performances from late September to January, with a large presence of companies and producers from the Region of Murcia (almost 60%). Inc. Deconné, Trama Teatro, Alquibla Teatro, Teatro del Limo, La Cueva Teatro and Teatro de la Delivery are some of the Murcian companies that will perform on the stages of districts, as well as Silfo Teatro, Ribalta Teatro, Los Claveles y Cía. Railway, which will present several family productions.

National proposals include ‘Today can be my big night’, ‘a theatrical feast’ by Teatro and Vilo; ‘Orlando’, adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel by Teatro Defondo, and music by Los Hermanos Cubero. And among the family shows: ‘Waiting for Will’, a musical by Egos Petits based on the works of Shakespeare (FETEN 2022 Award for Best Musical Show); ‘Ikimilikiliklik (My little one)’, by the Basque company Marie de Jongh, National Prize for Theater for Children and Youth 2018; ‘Under the roof’, by Pata Teatro (FETEN 2020 Award for Best Authorship), and ‘When the fish fly’, by La ChicaCharcos.

Titeremurcia will also be present at the Bernal Theater and the Auditoria with six proposals, including ‘A Story Upside Down’, from the Italian company La Baracca-Testoni Ragazzi and winner of the FETEN Award 2022 for the best early childhood show.

Support for amateur theater is reinforced by the first edition of the ‘Ciudad de Murcia’ National Amateur Theater Contest, organized by the Federation of Amateur Theater Associations of the Region of Murcia (FATEAMUR), in collaboration with the Municipal Council of Murcia. A festival taking place from September 17 to October 22 at the Bernal Theater and whose call is still open.

And in the five municipal auditoriums, the strong support of local entities (mainly bands and music groups) remains; to new artists, through proposals such as the Young Soloists cycle and the exhibition of Cultural Reagents projects; and, in general, to the companies and creators of the Murcia region, both in the programming of shows and in the residencies that some of them perform in these spaces for the preparation of their new productions.
