The medical care for prisoners is in the money! In 2024, the treatment costs already cost nearly 165 million euros. The majority is eliminated in public hospitals.
With these figures you can already get dizzy: as can be seen in the answer to a parliamentary request from FPö to Minister of Justice Anna Sporrer (Spö), the costs for medical care for prisoners continue to rise rapidly. In the previous year to no less than 165 million euros! For comparison: in 2020 the treatment “only” will cost 2.10 million.
High costs for psychiatresses
The majority continues to eliminate external care for prisoners, ie in public hospitals, the FPö National Councilor Christian Lausch criticizes: “Where the health insurance policy is stopped to save at the expense of normal people and patients, the judiciary is increasingly pronounced.”
One problem: most prizes only have a weakly equipped medical department. For safety reasons, the prisoners are often in blocked departments in hospitals – according to costs such as private patients, according to criticism.
The financial effort for accommodation in psychiatric institutions is particularly high. Almost 72 million euros were made in the previous year alone. External specialists, general practitioners and dentists cost almost ten million euros.
And for psychologists and psychotherapists, the Ministry of Justice spent around 4.3 million euros. Money that is a good gap in the budget and according to FPö should be used better. Lausch: “So there is no longer enough to increase the legal staff.”
