Road blocked – protesters beat up taxi drivers on the Vienna Ring

Date:

A spontaneous demonstration on the Wiener Ring led to a large-scale police action on Sunday night. About 50 participants – apparently Kurds – blocked all lanes. Some protesters attacked a taxi driver during the protest and beat the 40-year-old.

Around 01:00 there was a spontaneous demonstration at the Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring. Those present demanded “freedom for Öcalan”, and chants were also heard criticizing Turkey’s actions, police spokesman Markus Dittrich told krone.at.

Attack on Kurdish positions
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Turkish air force attacked Kurdish positions in northern Syria on Sunday night. At least twelve people were killed and others injured. The regions of Kobane and Aleppo were hit. These attacks led to about 50 people spontaneously gathering at the ring during the night.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is based in the UK and draws its information from a network of different sources in Syria. The information can often hardly be verified by an independent party.

The demonstrators blocked all lanes of the ring and during the demonstration an argument broke out with the 40-year-old taxi driver. Several perpetrators attacked the professional driver with their fists and also damaged the man’s car. The victim sustained injuries and required treatment.

crowd “visibly upset”
With a large contingent, the police managed to persuade the “visibly distraught crowd” to leave the track. About half an hour later, the demo broke and the man responsible for the impromptu rally was reported, Dittrich said.

One of the suspected attackers, a 21-year-old Turk, was arrested. Further investigation is underway to find the other assailants who assaulted the taxi driver, it said.
