Polisario front leader Brahim Gali was re-elected Friday as general secretary of the Saharawi movement and president of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). Gali, who remains in office for three years, received 1,253 votes, representing 69% of the total, while his rival, Bashir Mustafa, received 31% of the vote, according to Saharawi television.

The vote took place as part of a congress held in the city of Dakhla, attended by more than 2,000 delegates, to decide on “the future of the Saharawi cause” and to set the movement’s priorities, including the composition of the secretariat. and the election of the Secretary General, the highest authority of the Polisario.

The electoral commission’s rapporteur, Mohamed Mohamed Ismail, stressed that the body did not record any violations or obstacles preventing congressmen from fulfilling their electoral duty, the SPS news agency said. Polisario’s deputy for Spain, Abdullah Arabi, for his part, appreciated that the Congress is in a “decisive” phase in the struggle for the decolonization of Western Sahara, especially “following the ceasefire violation by Morocco that the Saharawis have forced people to resume armed struggle,” a statement from Polisario said.

Born in Smara on August 19, 1949, Ghali was elected General Secretary of the Polisario in 2016 following the death of Mohamed Abdelaziz after nearly 40 years in office. Among his functions, he was Minister of the Occupied Territories from 1998 to 1999 and Representative of the Polisario in Spain between 1999 and 2008.

The former Spanish colony of Western Sahara was occupied by Morocco in 1975 despite resistance from the Polisario front, with whom it remained at war until 1991, when both sides signed a ceasefire with a view to holding a self-determination referendum. the elaboration of the census and whether or not to include the Moroccan settlers have so far prevented the call.

On November 14, 2020, the Polisario Front declared the ceasefire with Morocco broken in response to a Moroccan military action against Sahrawi activists in Guerguerat, in the agreed demilitarized zone, which for the Sahrawis constitutes a violation of the terms of the Stop the fire meant.
