‘ER’ actor John Aylward dies at age 75

John Aylward, an actor known for his role as Dr. Donald Anspaugh on ‘ER’, has died at age 75. His agent, Mitchell K. Stubbs, confirmed to Variety that Aylward died of natural causes on Monday, May 16, in Seattle.

Born on November 7, 1946 in Seattle, Aylward graduated from the University of Washington in 1970 with a BA in Drama. He began working as a stage actor, founding Seattle’s Empty Space Theater in 1973. He also worked regularly at the Repertory Theater, located in his hometown.

On television, he made his debut with the TV movie ‘The Secret Life of John Chapman’ and later appeared in such productions as ‘Doctor in Alaska’, ‘Third Degree Burn’, ‘Witness in the Shadows’ or ‘Amnesia’. In 1996, he got his big break thanks to ‘ER’, filming 74 episodes. He made his last appearance in fiction in 2008 during the fifteenth and final season.

On the small screen, he also occasionally appeared in titles such as ‘Mad Men’, ‘CSI’, ‘The Mentalist’, ‘Without a Trace’, ‘Cold Case’, ‘Fringe’ (On the Limit) or ‘Nobodies’ ‘. In addition, he is remembered for his participation in six episodes of “The West Wing of the White House.”

His filmography includes such films as ‘Instinct’, ‘The Crazies’, ‘Armageddon’, ‘The Mother of the Groom’, ‘Down with Love’ or ‘9 Days’. His last works date back to the year 2020 when he released the tapes ‘The Nowhere Inn’ and ‘The Way Back’ and appeared in several episodes of ‘Briarpatch’.
