The City Council of Abarán, together with the Cajamurcia Foundation and LA VERDAD, opened this Friday the registration period to participate in the IV Pedro Soler Journalist Short Story Contest, which is about the world of journalism in whose honor its name is given to the contest. gives . The jury consists of the official chronicler of Abarán, José Carrasco, and the journalists Manuel Madrid, Encarna Yelo and María Soler, daughter of the honorary member. This year’s organizers of the competition will miss the recently deceased journalist García Martínez, a close friend of Pedro Soler and a member of the jury since the first edition.

The rules of the contest, one of the few journalistic themes held in Spain, can be found on the websites of the Abarán City Council (www.abaran.es) and the Cajamurcia Foundation (www.fundacioncajamurcia.es).

Official chronicler of the city of Murcia, member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa María de la Arrixaca de Murcia, researcher, writer, art critic and journalist for the newspaper LA VERDAD for over 40 years, Pedro Soler – who died in November 2018 –, he was much loved in his hometown, Abarán, which is why the city council of this city launched this initiative in 2019 to keep his memory alive and encourage literary creation.

With a professional and personal life closely linked to the world of arts, literature and culture in general, Soler was one of the brightest minds in regional journalism who, through honesty and hard work, tried to be a faithful notary of reality. to be. He started his work as a researcher who wrote the history of THE TRUTH, on the first centenary of this newspaper. He is also the author of the biographies of Francisco Martínez García, Martínez Tornel and Baquero Almansa. His other works are ‘History of the Virgin of Fuensanta’; ‘Yesterday and Today from the Teatro Circo de Murcia (1982-2011)’ and ‘Four Incredible Stories’.

A recognized art critic, he contributed to the promotion of numerous Murcian plastic makers, leaving his personal mark in exhibition reviews and in interviews published in the daily pages of the newspaper as well as in the GPS and Ababol supplements. That is why the poster for each edition is the work of an artist from the Murcia region.

Antonio Tapia (Murcia, 1965) is the author of the original work illustrating the poster for this fourth edition. Considered by critics to be one of the best representatives of the new contemporary figuration in the Murcia region, Tapia is a self-taught visual artist with a ‘nostalgic’ rhetoric that addresses themes of time, memory, society and imagination. His work is part of magical realism, with scenes transformed into illusions that play with the subconscious, pieces transferred into unconventional contexts that invite the viewer to “somehow revitalize what is in front of him”. as Pedro wrote in his day Soler in an art critic.

Tapia imagines the world he longs for. And he has done so on the poster for this edition, specially made for this competition, which he has given the title ‘Creation mists with the aroma of poppies’: played like a child, germinated sentences rest between mists of memories. In it rest, waiting, the humble tools of a writer to bloom like the delicate ababol, a seed that Master Pedro spread on this land and which blooms vigorously every year in this short story competition’, says the painter. Tapia plays with the poppy or ababol, in a fun game reminiscent of the LA TRUTH supplement in which Pedro Soler published interviews, reports and art criticism.

In addition, this year, as a novelty, in September, a round table with artists from the Murcia region will be held in the Municipal Library of Abarán to commemorate the facet of art critic of the journalist Pedro Soler, one of the illustrious sons of the Municipality of the Vega Alta del Segura.
