Two mountaineers were killed Friday morning in an icefall on the Grand Combin in the Swiss Valais. Another nine people were injured in the accident, some seriously.
The alarm was triggered by other mountaineers at around 6:20 am, the canton of Valais police said. The accident site is 3400 meters above sea level. There were a total of 17 climbers in the accident area, divided into different groups.
French and Spaniards dead, wounded flown out
Two people died at the scene of the accident: a 40-year-old Frenchman and a 65-year-old Spaniard. Nine climbers flew by helicopter to Sion Hospital and University Hospital in Lausanne. Among these, two are seriously injured. Other people were taken off the scene by helicopter.
A total of seven helicopters were involved in the rescue operation. The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation.
