The UMU attracts chemical talent with MasterChem final

Date:

The meeting has become a benchmark when it comes to introducing students to chemical concepts in the classroom

On June 15, the winners of the IV edition of the MasterChem competition, an initiative of the University of Murcia (UMU), in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation of Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation will be announced , in which the participating teams will have to demonstrate their skills in the laboratory to emerge as the winner.

Out of more than 250 participants, only nine teams will have the chance to enjoy an intense day in which they will first encounter a chemical ‘escape room’ that will lead them to the big final test: the crowning moment of the competition in which they will experiment without knowing the test or the materials.

All tests are judged by a team of national researchers, who determine both the winners and those who will receive two additional prizes: the direct pass for the international Science in Action competition and the pass for the physics and chemistry experiences awarded by the Faculty Chemistry of the UMU.

In recent years, MasterChem has become a benchmark for introducing chemical concepts into the classroom. In this way, laboratory disciplines are approached in a practical and attractive way for primary, secondary and baccalaureate.

The award ceremony will take place at the end of the morning at the Green Meeting of the UMU Faculty of Chemistry.

Before reaching the finals, all teams had the chance to get to know each other and calm their nerves at a chemistry fair where they could present various scientific experiences to the rest of the attendees.

For its realization, MasterChem has the support of the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia, the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) in the Territorial Section of the Region of Murcia, the Illustrious College of Chemists of the Region, the Faculty of Chemistry and regional companies such as Tecnoquim, Proquilab, Hero, Linasa and Aquadeus.

The Faculty of Mathematics of the UMU hosted the final of the III edition of the Math_talentUM competition, which brought together more than 60 students from different educational centers in the Murcia region. After the final evaluation, two teams from each category will be declared the winners of this University of Murcia math competition.

Math_talentUM is committed to promoting math discipline in a fun and entertaining way for younger students. In addition, it also seeks innovation in the classroom with initiatives that introduce mathematics more effectively.

The success of this edition is demonstrated by the participation of 345 students. In the competition, students (5th and 6th grade, 1st and 2nd ESO, 3rd and 4th ESO) let their imaginations run wild with plays, competitions and games. The six victorious teams had to pass a math test based on numerical, geometric, logical, manipulative questions, etc.
