Fernando pioneered raising his voice against ETA, when there was a (literally) handful who met bare-chested on the street
During his first phase as a historian, Fernando García de Cortázar was a recognized expert in the history of the Basque Country and the Spanish Church. There he demonstrated everything that had to be demonstrated as a prestigious historian. In the early 1990s, I proposed to him a challenge: to write a summary of the history of Spain, of an informative nature and for non-regular readers of that genre. It should be remembered that historical dissemination was not held in high esteem among academic historians and no synthesis of these features had been published since Franco’s death, as regional history predominated. Fernando welcomed the project with enthusiasm and executed it brilliantly. And so he “dynamized” the way the story was understood by his colleagues, the public and of course the editors. Since then, he has become the most esteemed historian, leaving academic history and embracing informational science as if it were an evangelistic mission. As a result, he has left behind a handful of titles that are widely read and appreciated by the general public.
In another sense, Fernando was a pioneer in raising his voice against ETA, when a (literally) handful gathered bare-chested on the street as the gang murdered someone, faced with the brutality of the insults of the pupils. It can be said that he was the first to point out the nakedness of the Basque pathology when it was spoken only in a whisper and to very reliable interlocutors.
Any memory of the figure of Fernando cannot ignore his dedication to the written word, that which said so much about «the will to style», both the form and the content, and to crown it all, poetry, the most difficult art, which he read so much and which he introduced en masse (as a private label) in all his books. Perhaps he wrote so well because of the amount of poetry he always read.
