An East Belfast woman has emotionally thanked her clients for continuing to work after being diagnosed with a devastating incurable cancer.
In August, hairstylist Ashley Nicole Lowe, 29, was told she had lichen sclerosus, a skin condition that causes itchy white patches to appear on the genitals or other parts of the body.
He was later discovered to have stage IV chronic lymphocytic leukemia and had a life expectancy of two to seven years.
Mother daughter continues to work full time when she can at the Royal Beauty Salon on Shankill Road.
No matter what she’s been through, Ashley Nicole was honored as Hair Extension Specialist of the Year at the 2021 Northern Ireland Hair & Beauty Awards, held at the Hotel Europe on Sunday night.
As she is currently battling an infection, Ashley Nicole’s classmates have received the award in her name.
The child’s mother also won the award for Best Wedding Hairstylist for 2019 and 2020.

Speaking to Be, a woman from East Belfast said: “I went to the doctors because I had tumors and when I went to check on the tumors, they came back like cancer, from the biopsy. Then I went for a pre-operative surgery.
When he came back, it was chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and we heard it had spread, and it was primary cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy now.
“I’ll still be working full time, even if I’m not feeling well, so I think when you start and leave, it will take you faster.
“Hairdressing is a hobby, not a job. I keep working, clients give me pimples, I just don’t want to stop. I think when you stop, you start giving up.”
Ashley Nicole thanked her clients for their support.
He added, “I can’t do without her. I’ve been a hairdresser for more than 14 years. Support for each of them from the day of the diagnosis…As soon as I walk in people think: How are you? Are you still working? I don’t think you work again ‘But if you are not Well, I won’t be.
“Every day they encourage me to stand up and move on. I love what I do. I love watching the people who come in and then their faces when they leave because they have completely changed.”
The mother explained how excited it is when her hard work is rewarded with these awards.
“Whenever I cry, I get confused. Think of the number of wonderful hairdressers all over Belfast, even in Northern Ireland. When you get there… Getting to the final is also an amazing achievement. Winning or even positioning is absolute.” [hairdressers and beauticians].

“Every year I think I won’t win and I won’t say who it will be. And when I win, I’m just spoiled. According to the Hair and Beauty Award, there are clients who will vote for you, and after the vote it goes to the judges who make the final decision.
“These are the customers who really helped me win high acclaim last night.”
East Belfast hairstylist hopes to positively encourage others who are struggling.
“Just go on. Something like that can make you frustrated, make you really depressed, make you want to shut the door and not go anywhere.”
“I just want to urge others to move on, whatever happens, you can get past it. We all know what the end will be, but if you live behind a closed door, you won’t have a good one.”
