The Belfast children’s mission to help a friend fulfill his dream of playing football –

Date:

Niall’s colleagues will start fundraising in April

The youth of West Belfast Football Club will begin a series of challenges in April to help their friend who suffers from a weak muscle ailment.

Niall McKay was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy on December 5, 2016, and his family has been struggling with treatment and recovery ever since.

The eight-year-old has a passion for football and does it all at Anderssontown Community Football Club, where he has been his lifelong friend.

In April, the club will participate in fundraising to help cover the costs of treating a teen who travels to the United States every two months to receive doses.

Speaking on Belfast Live, Shauna McGuinness, director of the Anderstown Community Football Club, said children had responded by attracting Niall’s funding.

“We have kids training with our 2014 age group called Nail. Niall dreamed of playing football, although at the age of 10 he might be in a wheelchair due to his condition.

“She travels to America every few months to get a very expensive trial treatment for her family, so we decided in 2014 that they wanted to help Niall and they organized several different events for her throughout April.

“First of all, we have a lottery with Easter eggs and bats, the price of each is 1. Winners of all age groups will be revealed, we have seven in the club.

“The main event will be a sponsored walk and this is a trail called The Ireland Way – it starts at the Causeway Coast and goes to Co Cork. It’s 620 miles long and we have about 30 kids who will walk these tubes together.

“They can say they practically walked from top to bottom on the island of Ireland. With this we hope to raise money for Niall through sponsor papers and Go Fund Me.

At the end of the month, just to finish something big, we’re going to Diva Mountain and the club will also donate ფ1 for every mile traveled that day.

Shauna Neal has been described as a “cool little boy” who is a wonderful outside friend to the team.

He added: “He loves football a lot and trains with us and plays matches with our players. He always does his best and intervenes as much as possible.

“About three or four kids came from his school, young people and parents are really involved, and the support has been tremendous.

We, as a club, want to thank the guys, they were great. We would also like to thank the general public for their support.

“The company is supporting us all the way and we can’t wait for it all to start in April.”
