False Papers – Secret Service General Wanted to Flee Ukraine

Date:

A major general of the reserve of the Ukrainian secret service SBU has been prevented from leaving the country illegally, according to authorities. At a border crossing to Hungary, the general presented false papers on Friday, according to which he was not conscripted.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine in Kiev, the man had been given a military rank, namely private. The Major General was subsequently arrested.

Zelenskyj´: “No time for traitors”
In a video message Friday night, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had stripped two SBU brigadier generals of their military ranks. He did not comment on what the senior intelligence officials were doing. According to the report, one of them most recently was SBU chief in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, which was occupied by Russian forces.

“I don’t have time to deal with traitors,” Zelenskyy said. He expressly praised the commitment of other SBU employees in the war unleashed by Russia.

The SBU is the successor to the former Soviet secret service KGB in Ukraine. The SBU maintained close contacts with Moscow until 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula and sparked the war in eastern Ukraine. Therefore, there were always doubts about the service’s loyalty to the Ukrainian government.
