Silence with sexual violence: is nothing happening?!

Date:

Sociologist and sexologist Barbara Rothmüller on the search for explanations for the inaction about sexual violence against children and young people.

Institutions find it difficult to deal with allegations of sexual violence. Maybe it’s the fear of blaming someone. Or the concern to ruin the reputation of the establishment. In any case, disbelief, looking the other way and silencing are common reactions to what shouldn’t be.

It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes for allegations of sexual assault in institutions to have consequences. How is it possible that perpetrators sexually abuse children under the eyes of adults for years? Apparently many people shy away from clearly naming what they observe. Because the irritating behavior of the perpetrators is often well known, although it may not be the full extent of the crimes.

Someone who abuses children does so with a lot of energy and lust for power. She splits up with her colleagues, spins intrigue, fuels doubts about the allegations, thus safeguarding her actions. It is all the more important that schools, associations and childcare take their responsibility – and also preventively. No educational institution should have no idea how to deal with border violations and suspicious cases!

Seizures can only be prevented if adults are vigilant. Protection concepts are needed in every institution, as are contact persons to whom children, young people and adults can turn with complaints. This is the only way to end the complicit silence.
