Exactly 14 years ago on October 4, shortly after midnight, multiple shots echoed through the otherwise idyllic urban forest on the Völkermarkt in Carinthia. Just a few hours later, the horror find: A mountain biker discovered the body of an initially unknown woman off the beaten track, on the banks of the Drau, as he drove past.
Executed, with a total of four shots to the chest and head – then doused with gasoline and set on fire, as the autopsy later revealed. But there was no trace of the perpetrator – and the identity of the victim also surprised the investigators.
Victims from Italy identified thanks to dentures
It took four years before the unknown, almost unrecognizable dead person could finally get a name: it was the 49-year-old Anna Todde. Examination of the teeth and her prosthesis had led investigators to the Italian woman who had most recently lived in Turin.
But the horrific bloody act (the act was declared a cold case in 2020) should keep the criminals busy to this day. Even in the direction of a possible mafia execution was determined. However, thanks to the DNA results, the mystery of the murder now seems solved: after cross-border comparisons, traces on the victim’s corpse led directly to the “Le Vallette” prison in Turin.
DNA evidence leads to Italian prison
Here is the Moroccan Brahim A. – a convicted drug dealer and then the fiancée of Anna Todde. In addition to the incriminating DNA traces, the investigation also revealed that the suspect and the murder victim were probably traveling together in a VW Polo shortly before the bloody crime. The 48-year-old Moroccan obviously denies having anything to do with the murder. The extradition procedure to Austria is currently underway.
