Two Georgians (aged 21, 26) had to answer to the Salzburg regional court on Tuesday. Accusation: smuggling. According to the indictment, the two brought a total of nine Syrian refugees from Slovenia across the border on March 15 – in an Opel Vectra.
Prosecutors accuse the smugglers of forcing the refugees – four men, two women and three children – to suffer in the back seat and trunk.
The destination was Germany. But the journey ended in Mittersill – because of a traffic accident. The refugees and two defendants fled into the forest, but were quickly tracked down thanks to a thermal imaging camera.
One defendant confessed
One of the two Georgians admitted the charges during the criminal trial. The other said he was a refugee himself, but the court ultimately did not believe him. The non-final sentences: 18 months of partial imprisonment each, of which the Georgians must serve six.
