A former student colleague of the Russian president will take over as chairman of the Supreme Court in Moscow. It is suspected that Vladimir Putin wants to consolidate his power by casting 70-year-old Irina Podnosova.
A Kremlin committee, which is responsible, among other things, for the appointment of judges, informed about the candidacy on Thursday.
Studied with Putin in St. Petersburg
Podnosova was born on October 29, 1953 in Pskov and graduated from the Law Faculty of Leningrad State University – today St. Petersburg State University – in 1975. There she studied with Putin, the Russian state news agency Tass reported.

Putin is already protected from prosecution
In the past, the 71-year-old Putin has repeatedly promoted friends and associates from his time in St. Petersburg, as well as family members, to lucrative positions. Critics of the Kremlin complain about the widespread cronyism and cronyism that the president has long used to secure his power. In recent years, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has repeatedly criticized Russian judgments, ruling in favor of the plaintiffs and sometimes awarding them damages for pain and suffering. As part of its war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia withdrew from the Council of Europe in 2022 after 26 years of membership – meaning Russians seeking action against verdicts in their home country can no longer turn to the court in Strasbourg.
