A patrol boat of the EU Border Protection Agency Lesbos, which was just looking for migrants who were missing in the Mediterranean Sea, was anchored and sunk on Monday.
As the Greek Rundfunk Ertnews reported, all six people were saved on board by a boat from the Greek coast guard and brought to the port of Molyvos in the north of the island. According to the initial information from circles of the Greek coast guard, the boat ran on an underwater rock.
Migrants raised the alarm on arrival
The sunken boat would belong to the Portuguese coast guard, which is used as part of a Frontex mission in the Aegean Sea. At the time of the accident, the Portuguese boat would have been involved in the search for four missing migrants. Other migrants who had previously reached the Greek island had reported that the four people missed, Greek media from Lesbos reported.
Frontex supports the Greek authorities in monitoring the sea limit between Turkey and Greece – one of the routes for irregular migration to Europe. Patrouilla boats, planes, drones and emergency services of various EU member states are used.
