After the end of the Second World War, a long period of growth, peace and prosperity began in Europe, which was called the welfare state. In Spain, that period made us wait several years to step into that phase of progress. One of the areas in which this welfare state took shape was health care, which has progressed by leaps and bounds over the past century. It is widely noted that the Spanish healthcare system is at the level of the best in the world, and it has proven it well in the conduct of its professionals to fight the covid-19 pandemic, who have provided ample evidence of their wisdom as doctors . Going down a step on the territorial scale, we see that the region of Murcia is endowed with remarkable infrastructures, with a network of public and private health centers, which provide reasonable coverage for the citizens, enabling care for the citizens in this area to make. more than acceptable, although we know very well that the needs in this area will never be fully satisfied. In the world of health in our region, we enjoy a center, within that bouquet of public and private, that shines with its own light and deserves everyone’s admiration on its own merits. We refer to the Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, whose operational scope extends to the Murcia Oeste area and neighboring municipalities, with an estimated population of 550,000 people, also taking into account that those patients who, due to the complexity of the operation or the particular seriousness of the sick or injured person, they need it. La Arrixaca is more than a hospital, it is already known as a health city, since the 4,000 employees, including medical and non-medical, administrative and subordinate personnel, the 1,000 patients that can take place there and the thousands of visitors that come daily from the various pavilions, certainly form a great city with a lot of life, and never better said some of life in this place. Founded in 1975 and therefore almost finished with its half-century of existence, it has become, thanks to various circumstances, the health lung of the Region. Practically speaking, the entire spectrum of medical specialties present in this hospital covers every health need. Faced with the aseptic and somewhat icy environment usually observed in hospitals, a high degree of humanity is also inhaled at the same time, something that is due to the experiences and thousands of moving personal stories, certainly lived in La Arrixaca. since the opening, in which all sorts of mixed feelings will have occurred. On the one hand, the immense joy of restoring health in some cases and, on the other hand, the sadness of losing a relative or friend. Identical or similar joy or sorrow experienced by doctors and other health personnel when things have gone well, or when the patient’s severity has become so extreme that it has been impossible to heal. Without prejudice to the rest of the hospitals in our region, the Virgen de la Arrixaca is like a balsamic oasis of health for the seriously ill, or maybe even more, it is like a kind of divinity, in which we put all our trust, due to the extraordinary technological equipment at its disposal and especially the vast accumulated talent that exists among its optional staff. It is an absolute reality that the most precious asset we have, life, we literally put it in your hands. In addition to medical care, excellent resource and resource management makes it possible to provide 1,000 breakfasts and an equal number of lunches and dinners each day, while providing a commendable aspect of cleanliness. We would need several pages, on double pages, to list all the prizes, awards and other honors achieved by the Virgen de la Arrixaca in his still short history. Among other aspects to highlight, it is a benchmark in Spanish health in organ donation and transplantation, an activity for which it holds the national leadership. On the other hand, the mother and child ward produces the highest number of deliveries compared to any other Spanish hospital. Experience shows that research in the field of health is essential to continue achieving higher levels of well-being, providing answers and treatments for diseases that medicine has not yet been able to control. Well, in this sense, the Hospital Clínico Universitario de la Arrixaca, in collaboration with the University of Murcia, has carried out very fruitful work that has led to numerous successes in this field and to position it as a pointer on the national map of health . There are not a few people, patients and relatives who leave La Arrixaca with immense gratitude to the doctors, because their hands have achieved what a priori seemed almost impossible: to restore their health. Despite all that has been said, it is an honor and a pride for the Murcia to have a hospital of this category.
