The Gfrett of Social Democracy with the EU

Date:

The fancy word “Gfrett” is more Bavarian than Austrian. It popularly means trouble. Or irritated excitement. Or an activity that requires a lot of effort, but ultimately leads to a good result. This is still unclear when it comes to the relationship between the SPÖ and Europe.

1) Andreas Babler, the new SPÖ party leader for five days, said in 2020 as a small part of a long interview that the EU is the “most aggressive foreign policy military alliance that has ever existed, worse than NATO”. Whatever one’s position on the EU is, objectively it’s nonsense. From the beginning, the European Communities were a peace project to settle the centuries-long Franco-German conflict. In 2012, the EU received the Nobel Peace Prize because – keyword world wars – a continent of war was turned into a continent of peace.
