Parents will be reminded that the application portal for nursery and primary school locations in Northern Ireland will open in a few days from September 2022 to June 2023.

Just five days after the first applications opened for the next academic year, the Education Authority (EA) released information on key dates for the schools’ admissions process.

All schools/playgroups have acceptable standards. If they get more applications than the seats they have available, they use certain criteria to determine who is offering them seats.

Before you begin filling out your child’s application, you should carefully read the eligibility criteria for each kindergarten/primary school that you want to prioritize.

You must complete the application with all relevant details of how your child meets the kindergarten/school admission criteria.

Online applications will open on Monday January 10, 2022 at 12 noon and close on Friday, January 28, 2022 at 12 noon.

Seats are not reserved on a first-come-first-served basis. Schools and playgroups will not consider applications until the closing date.

It is important that you do the following:

  • Find a kindergarten/school in your area.
  • Read the eligibility criteria.
  • Check the required supporting documents.
  • List at least four advantages of the app.

Children who have completed 4 years of age by 4 July must begin primary education after their fourth birthday from the beginning of the school year.

Children born between July 2, 2017 and July 1, 2018 will begin primary school in September 2022, when they will be of compulsory school age and parents/guardians must apply for a place in elementary school.

The Citizen Online portal opens on January 10, 2022 at 12 noon and closes on January 28, 2022 at 12 noon for admission in September 2022.

  • Before you start applying, learn more about the schools you are interested in by reading the application criteria.
  • The Admissions Help Center 028 9598 5595 will be available for digital assistance.
  • If you do not submit your application by 12 noon on Friday 28 January 2022, your application will be considered late.
  • If you cannot apply online, paper applications are only available upon request from the Department of Education.

When applying, it is recommended that you list at least four primary schools based on your preference, as there is no guarantee that your child will qualify for first priority.

You can list up to six benefits in your online application. If you want to list more than six priorities, you should email the additional benefits and reasons for the benefits.

The same preferences cannot be listed over and over again. The only exception is if you want to apply to a school with an Irish upper secondary school and an English preparatory school, in which case you will have to list the school twice. If you apply online, you will be notified.

You can log into the online application to see the result of your child’s application on the Kindergarten and Primary School website on Thursday, April 28, 2022.

If your child is not yet enrolled in the school listed on your application, EA will consult you on the same day and will be asked to indicate additional preferences from the list of schools that still have places.

post primary

If your child was born between July 2, 2010 and July 1, 2011, you must apply for a post-primary school place by September 2022.

Admission criteria will be published on Wednesday 12 January 2022.

Online applications will open on Tuesday February 1, 2022 at 12:00 and close on Wednesday February 23, 2022 at 16:00.

The following children are exempted from the primary school admission process:

  • Children with special educational needs.

There is no need to fill out an application if your child has a Special Educational Needs request as your child will be placed through EA’s Special Educational Needs division.

However, if your child is undergoing a legal evaluation and does not currently have an application, you must still apply for a place on a post-elementary course.

  • Children who attend an independent school.

You will need to contact the school directly to arrange your child’s admission to an independent school.
