2024 must be the year when Austria’s constructive politicians and parties overcome their sensitivities and plan and form a lasting government.
Let’s call it the neutral Sebastian-Kurz fixation. Regardless of whether it concerns ÖVP, SPÖ, NEOS and FPÖ: a year and a half after the involuntary departure of the ÖVP boss and chancellor, many politicians and civil servants still suffer from phantom pain. This is perhaps understandable to his supporters, because before and after Kurz the People’s Party only took second place and was allowed to dutifully vote for the SPÖ chancellor. In this role, the majority of publicists and journalists also liked her; the ÖVP was the junior partner in the countryside that could always be mocked or used to start a coalition dispute against the SPÖ.
