2023 is over. And as selected front pages of “Krone” impressively demonstrate, it generated many headlines. Some expected, but also many surprising, terrifying, sometimes quickly fading, but also lasting.
We have had to deal with the health crisis, inflation and Benko’s bankruptcy several times.
Above all, the elections made headlines. Our main story on January 29, the day Lower Austria voted, was more than prophetic: A choice that determines the course. She really did, it was said the next day Rise and crashon March 6 after the elections in Carinthia Red wads and black rays of hopeon April 24, after the Salzburgers had also voted: Choice of extremee. The summary a few days later: Black and blue on the rise.
We have been most intensively occupied with the violent SPÖ turbulence. From Conny Bischofberger’s interview question to the then party leader Rendi-Wagner on February 12 How long are you going to keep doing this? above Red oath of loyalty for Rendi-Wagner (8. 3.), The SPÖ war rages on the open stage just two days later, Doskozil is in the lead (March 16), the question And now? after candidates Doskozil, Rendi-Wagner and Babler were almost tied in the vote until the successful (though ultimately inaccurate) pun DOSKO at the DOEL(June 4). The interview followed Doskozil wants to become chancellor (June 5), before the party’s worst-case scenario followed the next day. We copped GE-SPÖ-TT. They followed SPÖ on the ground, Babler takes overand on June 8, three days after the Doskozil interview: Babler wants to become chancellor.
Yes, politics can be amusing too – at least in the flashback…
And what headlines will 2024 produce? We won’t know for sure in a year. But it is clear that the National Council’s election campaign, the elections themselves – sooner or later – and the likely difficult formation of a government afterwards will fill many front pages.
The Austrians really want it. A calmer, more responsible and much more future-oriented policy, for example. Will we get that? In the meantime, let’s at least dream of headline-worthy successes for our national football team at the European Championships in Germany.
Let’s hope for a year with as many positive headlines as possible.
Happy New Year with your “crown”!
