In fact, we continually hope. Here’s to better weather, more money, happiness or better times. In our fast-paced world, hope often becomes the driving force behind human relationships. Because it motivates us to believe in a better future even in difficult times.
Where to start? With the beautiful, uplifting. So: we are all creatures of hope. Even if you don’t realize it, every time you think about the future, you are not only taking a little trip back in time, but also bringing a better future into the present. I will do it. So it will be. That will be good. As a therapist, I experience time and time again how dramatic it can become when someone is hopeless.
Hope as a shadow lover
It can also be the other way around: against my better judgement, hope trumps everything. Shadow women in particular are addicted to hope like a narcotic. Hanna is 48 and has been Paul’s lover for fifteen years. With every attempt to break away from him, hope wins again: “I have to wait until the child goes to kindergarten/school/finishes his apprenticeship.” Paul currently says that he does not want his wife to leave for the time being because she has rheumatism. His ‘temporary’ fuels Hanna’s hope. “Paul will talk to her openly once she gets her disease under control.”
