Claus Pándi, editor-in-chief of “Krone” Salzburg, examines in his column “Concerns Salzburg” the performance of the British scandal-ridden ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the Salzburg Summit – not surprisingly, with his usual critical tone.
Today the “Salzburg Summit” starts again. That was actually a good idea. Invented five years ago in the circle of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who suddenly resigned, and the industrial association, it was intended to compete with the already somewhat weakened “Europaforum Alpbach”. Then a fresh wind came through Alpbach under the leadership of the internationally well-connected “Erste” banker Andreas Treichl. The counter-event in Salzburg remained a rather strange company. Many guests travelled simply for the prospect of attending the festival.
Confused by the ghost of the attention economy, the organizers of this year’s “Salzburg Summit” came up with one of the worst ideas imaginable: they invited former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to speak. The clown who manipulated Britain into Brexit. An eccentric who turned an already desolate country into an economic mess. A man for whom the truth is a joke. A politician who was irresponsible to the end, who imposed a strict lockdown on the island during the pandemic, which had poor hospitals but celebrated lavishly in Downing Street.
Nowadays Boris Johnson lives mainly from his speeches, for which he sometimes charges up to 300,000 euros. Okay, he is funny. But actually it is not funny at all. It is embarrassing for Salzburg.
