Typhoon ‘Gaemi’ is causing devastation in the Philippines. At least a dozen people have already died in the aftermath of the tropical storm. Due to heavy rain and severe flooding, most government offices and all schools were closed in most of the Philippine capital Manila.
The stock market also suspended trading. The government of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. responded to a recommendation from the civil protection agency.
Tens of thousands are now homeless
According to the Philippine weather service Pagasa, the typhoon recently strengthened the southwest monsoon, which had been bringing heavy rains since July 11.
Authorities say 12 people have died in flash floods and landslides in the past two weeks, leaving tens of thousands homeless and in evacuation centers.
The government has already provided financial support to 770,000 affected people in different parts of the country, Marcos Jr. wrote. In Manila, water levels were several meters high in some places and many streets were closed.
Wind peaks at 190 km/h
According to Pagasa, ‘Gaemi’ was traveling with wind speeds of up to 155 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 190 km/h. “The typhoon and hurricane season is in full swing,” the German weather service wrote. “Although the development of hurricanes is currently limited, a tropical system in the Philippine Sea has now developed into a full-fledged typhoon.”
Taiwan and China are also being hit by the tropical storm. There is a threat of “extreme hurricane force” and very high waves, flash floods, flooding and mudslides should also be expected.
The Philippines is hit by an average of twenty typhoons each year. The worst storm to date, ‘Haiyan’, killed over 6,300 people in November 2013.
