Theft of place name signs and traffic signs often causes nuisance in municipalities in Burgenland. Now the police followed up on an anonymous tip and tracked down an illegal warehouse of these unusual ‘trophies’.
Traffic signs and other signs seem to be highly sought-after collector’s items in certain circles. The pewter trophies always disappear from one day to the next. The trail of thefts in recent years runs from Nickelsdorf via Forchtenstein and the district of Oberpullendorf to the south of the country.
Depot with reserve plates
The city of Oberwart had already set up a depot of spare signs in 2014 after a series of brutal coups. A copy cost 300 euros. The aim was to be able to react quickly in case of emergency and to prevent the traffic rules from being suspended.
Because as soon as the municipal sign was missing at the municipal border, the usual 50 km/h speed limit in the area no longer automatically applied: a carte blanche for speed offenders.
Six signs discovered
Thefts have been on the rise again recently. Thanks to an anonymous informant, a whole series of coups have been solved. His highly confidential tip led the police to an illegal depot. At the home address given by the insider, investigators found six pieces of loot.
Investigations are underway
In the house in the Güssing district, the officers seized four place name signs from Litzelsdorf, Unterwart and Rotenturm, as well as two traffic signs. It is currently being investigated whether more perpetrators are involved in the case.
