With a view to a possible second term of former American President Donald Trump, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo has warned of the consequences for the European Union. “If 2024 brings us ‘America First’ again, Europe will be more self-contained than ever,” De Croo said at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday. The EU must become “stronger, more independent and more self-reliant”.
“We should not be afraid of this prospect,” but see it as an opportunity, De Croo continued. The EU must strengthen its own economy and ensure that investment and production in industry remains in the Member States.
Hedging in the technology sector
The EU must protect itself, especially when it comes to new technologies in the energy and defense industries and for artificial intelligence. Belgium currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU.
Trump’s election victory will likely make matters worse
In the US, Trump clearly won the first Republican primaries in the state of Iowa. During his first term, Trump imposed high tariffs on imports from the EU.
If the ex-president wins the elections in November, there are fears that relations will deteriorate significantly. But even under incumbent President Joe Biden, the US government is massively subsidizing its own economy, at the expense of European manufacturers.
