Excitement around trans-athletes in our swimming. A legal matter between the US government and the University of Pennsylvania was arranged. In 2018, Lia Thomas, who lived as a man until then, had expressed himself as a transgender and hormone therapy. Finally, from 2021, she participated in swimming in women’s competitions and won the US College Championships, including three university records a year later.

However, Thomas will now be withdrawn again. Because during the setting up of a legal dispute, the University of Pennsylvania of President Donald Trump and the US government, it was decided that transgender athletes will be excluded from the women’s sports teams in the future and that early swimming reports will also be revised.

Statements from the university and the Ministry of Education
University President Larry Jameson explains in an official explanation: “We will check and update the swimming records of the PENN women to indicate who would keep the data in accordance with the current participation conditions.” The US Department of Education has also announced that Thomas’ participation in the swimming competitions for women had violated a federal law. A broadcast also adds: “Female athletes will return titles and records that were offensive by male athletes.”

“We are aware that some student athletes have been disadvantaged. We are apologizing to anyone who has suffered competitive disadvantages or fears on the basis of the then applicable guidelines,” says University President Jameson’s statement. He did not indicate whether the Thomas records have also been removed. The debates on the subject will continue after this decision.
