University President Larry Jameson explains in an official explanation: “We will check and update the swimming records of the PENN women to indicate who would keep the data in accordance with the current participation conditions.” The US Department of Education has also announced that Thomas’ participation in the swimming competitions for women had violated a federal law. A broadcast also adds: “Female athletes will return titles and records that were offensive by male athletes.”
“We are aware that some student athletes have been disadvantaged. We are apologizing to anyone who has suffered competitive disadvantages or fears on the basis of the then applicable guidelines,” says University President Jameson’s statement.
