To save energy, the German government is planning strict rules for autumn and winter. “Public buildings – with the exception of hospitals and social facilities, of course – may only be heated to 19 degrees,” Economic Affairs Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) announced.
“More savings are also needed in the world of work,” Habeck said in the “Süddeeutsche Zeitung”. This is currently being discussed with the Ministry of Labor and the social partners.
Extensive package of measures adopted in Spain
Spain has already adopted a comprehensive package of energy-saving measures. Since the end of May, public buildings and recently also shops, cultural institutions, airports and train stations may no longer be cooled below 27 degrees and only heated to a maximum of 19 degrees in winter. Shop windows must not be lit after closing time and the lighting in public buildings must be turned off when not in use.
EU gas emergency plan
The EU gas emergency plan came into effect on Tuesday. From the beginning of August to March next year, Member States will have to save 15 percent on gas – compared to the average of the last five years of this period. How the 27 EU countries lower their demand is up to them.
Germany must save considerably more gas
The regulation provides for numerous exemptions for states and “critical sectors of the economy”, such as the food industry. Given the exceptions, Germany will likely have to save significantly more gas than other countries to avoid major industry problems or even a recession if Russia’s gas supply were to stop. The German savings target is 20 percent. In Germany, some gas-fired power plants also supply electricity or district heating.
