VP shattered – sanctions against Russia are political explosives

Date:

With the rising cost of living in the country, there are growing calls to question the sanctions against Russia. Experts are now analyzing the debates surrounding anti-Putin measures. The mood has turned. Rags fly in the ÖVP.

sanctions against Russia. A crucial test in Austria. The FPÖ has long wanted to abolish sanctions. ÖVP bosses such as Thomas Stelzer from Upper Austria in the “Krone” are also starting to question the sanctions. That, on the other hand, is wrong with fellow party member and EU politician Otmar Karas. The sanctions are working, inflation is higher in Russia than in Austria.

Political calculus in debate
Nevertheless: “The shirt is closer to me than the skirt – this sentence touches the nerves of many,” says political professor Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle. Anton Mattle from Tyrol treats the subject from a political calculation. He has an election coming up based on grim poll data.

According to the political scientist, the sanctions are in principle populist pawns. You could also argue like French President Macron. “He’s talking about making sacrifices for a greater whole.”

Above all, VP shattered
Opinion researcher Christoph Haselmayer (IFDD) sees the ÖVP in particular as shattered in the debate. “The Greens have a clear line. Statements like Stelzer’s work against the federal party.” According to Haselmayer, the mood in the country has changed.

Sanctions against Russia are increasingly being questioned in the face of inflation. Tenor: We suffer more from the sanctions than the Russians. This could benefit the FPÖ. And: “The ÖVP doesn’t seem united. Nehammer is seen as a chancellor who has nothing under control.”
